PUMA is the acronym for a new “political party” and it stands for “Party Unity My Ass“. From what I can tell, they’re a group of Democratic Hillary Clinton supporters (in the primary) who are NOT for Obama even though he clinched the Democratic Party’s nomination. Check out this selection from The Confluence:

We will fill the role that the superdelegates have abrogated. It is our job to say “no”. We do not want to lose in 2008. We do not want another four years of Republican rule. We want 4 years of intelligence, competence and courage in a time of what will surely be a very critical time in our nation’s history. Terrorism is still out there. There are two wars going on. Our military is stretched so thinly that our national security is compromised. We have an energy crisis and many families are hurting. Our financial institutions got themselves over their heads. And there is a serious environmental catastrophe at hand in global warming.

Now is not the time to put a love object in office, a weakling who will be entirely dependent on his power elite enablers. Or worse, he may be a dissembler who has barely disguised his contempt for the voters.

There will be a lot of calls for “Unity!”. But let us acknowledge what this really is. “Unity” is a weapon that the party is going to use against us. It is the emotional blackmail of the teenager. “If you don’t let me have my way, it will be all YOUR fault if something bad happens!” “If you don’t get in line, it will be YOUR fault if we lose.”

[…] Barack Obama is a ruthless campaigner who has brought out the worst in the political system but no matter how far he has come, he is a failure. He has failed to live up to core Democratic principles, He has failed to respect the voters. He has failed to disguise his contempt for average, hard working American men and women. And because he has failed in so many ways to appeal to the electorate at large, he will fail the ultimate contest. He will be a failed presidential candidate. We do not wish to be associated with failure while there is still time and an opportunity to avoid it.

We will not be blackmailed into party unity in order to indulge irresponsible people in their fantasies. Our votes belong to us and we will do with them what we feel is best for us, the party and the country.

The action plan for PUMAs is:

1.) Dissociate yourself from the party. Tell them you will not be a party to its self destructive behavior.

2.) Reflect on your values. Read the credo at the top of this site and create at better one. Keep the language general and inclusive. Concentrate on universal truths and beliefs. Avoid wordsmithing.

3.) Stick together. We are powerful as a unit if we do not fall victim to the psychological warfare that is about to be directed at us. Turn off the media. Avoid conversations with trolls. Stand firm and do not yield.

4.) Remember that there is a better alternative. Hillary Clinton is the strongest candidate for the party and the nation. She has a lot of support out there. The nation will rally around her if we let them know we are not giving in. We must not let her concede one inch. Stand firm. Send her your good thoughts. Send her money. Do not give up.

5.) Spread the word.

I’ll leave it up to you to decide how you feel about the PUMA action plan and message. Maybe you feel duped or let down by the Democratic Party and agree with the PUMAs. Or you are a so-called “Obama Lover” and you think these people are way off base. Either way, I guess I’m just glad that folks are taking ownership in the process.

I’m for Obama, I’ll be clear on that. I can’t pretend to know how people feel, especially people who regard him as a “failure”. I just don’t get that. Still, I respect their right to say so, so long as it is in a productive and logical manner, not destructive or mean-spirited.

  1. I’ve been an Independent since I first registered to vote, but switched to Dem just to have a better chance at not having an extension of Dubya’s policies.

I even felt that Clinton was the more suitable candidate at one point, based on her years of experience. But as soon as I got to learn more about Obama and what he was bringing to the table, I felt that he could be the person to bring about more than just an end to the Bush-Cheney era, but bring a different way of thinking to the table.

THEN, Hillary began to lose, and she resorted to the tactics of old and I was like “GTFOOHWTBS. You failed.”
So… here I am, supporting Obama.
    Not cause he’s Black.
    Not because of the hype.
But because he seems like he wants to get some work done, and I’m all for it.

    Get the work done.

So… after hearing about these folks a few weeks back, (Think I saw the ringleader on TV somewhere after the last primary vote…) I had to wonder what exactly they had invested in this whole time.

Was it the message the candidate stood for or just the candidate as a personality?

Hillary supporters like this just come across as rabid fans just just wanted to see her win.
And now that she won,t have a shot for another 4 joints, they’re willing to cross party lines on some revenge isht?

    I mean… really?

And I can’t even really be mad at them, cause the Clinton campaign was behind setting these people into motion, and did not do much at all in terms of assuring that in the event that she lost, that those voters would at least remain party loyalists.

I think she needs to deal with this issue head-on if she’s really fighting for her party like she claims.

This comment is long as shit, and I think I’m just gonna copy it to my own blog as an entry. LOL

Check out this site, really funny, comparing Barack Obama to Chauncey Gardener from the movie, Being There:

  3. Ted

Well, it’s either gonna be McCain/Palin or …

Barack Obama starring as “Change” the Gardener in remake of movie classic, “Being There”, starring Peter Sellers as “Chance” the Gardener!

You know you guys are cut of the same cloth as the people who keep spouting “The South will Rise Again!” Well guess what. It didn’t.

You are not only making yourselves out to be a bunch of hand-wringing cry babies, you are hurting Hillary’s political future as she is seen as being the head of a bunch of poor losers.

Geeze and ripping off your name from a tennis shoe? Get a life.

  5. Phyllis

ya know what’s really funny about these PUMA people – they really are spitting in Hillary’s face. She doesn’t want them to support McCain, she wants them to support Obama. She has been very clear on this matter. So if they love her so much, why are they betraying her? If they really supported her they would wait to form their party (actually an idea that has merit) why don’t they wait til after the election? And how can they say that McCain has more in common with Hillary than Obama does? That is a flat-out lie. They are just p*ssed off because they were in love with the idea of a woman as president.

  6. Valerie

You PUMA people talk about it not being the time to put a “love object” in office. Well, aren’t you all just doing the same thing by being cry babies because Hillary did not get the nomination? You only wanted Hillary, not what she stands for. If you support her so much, why are you not listening to what she is saying about unifying with the party. Instead, you are stomping your feet and acting like a bunch of whiny teenagers who didn’t get their way. I saw one of your members on TV, outside the Dem convention who completely made your organization appear as a bunch of nut cases. She claimed she had a document that was published about Obama having gone to a Muslim school. When asked by Chris Matthews of MSNBC to reveal who and where the document came from, her response was, “I’m not going to tell you that.” She completely discredited your organization, on national TV. And… even if Obama had gone to a Muslim school, so what. Are you still clinging to the stupid idea that all Muslims are terrorists? That’s just plain stupidity, and again tells me exactly where your heads are at; up your (party unity my) asses!

  7. Emily

    Dear Valerie,

Thank you for clearing up that whole “Muslims are not terrorists” thing. I think it’s adorable to receive lessons on tolerance from someone who uses the very logic which results in racism. What I mean, Val, is that when you use the description of one (1) reputed member of PUMA as a “nut” in order to discredit all of us as “nuts,” you (meaning you, Valerie) are engaging in prejudicial, and (I may say) sloppy thinking.

Let me help, by clearing up 4 of your other misconceptions. Perhaps they will clear things up for other people who feel as you do.

    1) You seem to be under the impression that every participant in PUMA is a disgruntled Hillary voter. I do not vote for a person, I vote only for a representative who will represent my ideals in the government. I was open to Obama as a possibility, until he selected Joe Biden as his running mate. Biden presided over the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings (google it Valerie) during which time he described Ms. Hill as a liar and indicated that he did not believe that sexual harrassment in the workplace could exist in a way that would present a problem to a woman. Many consider Biden responsible for Clarence Thomas getting confirmed to the Supreme Court (try looking up the things that Mr. Thomas believes Valerie, it may help you to understand why I object to Biden). I think of Mr. Biden as one of the most sexist and ethnocentric (don’t be lazy Val, just get out the dictionary and look it up) member of Congress. Examples of Mr. Biden’s often racist sensibilities are available for viewing on YouTube (try “Biden 7-11”).

    2) You appear to think that voters should obey commands from their candidates/representatives. I’m afraid it’s the other way around my dear, perhaps you’re thinking of a monarchy.

    3) You seem to believe that calling us “nut cases” and asses (which you indicate is also where we keep our heads) will create party unity, and encourage us to embrace the Obama campaign. I’m not sure where you got that idea, but I’m afraid you are mistaken. It tends to offend us.

    4) You act as if voting requires no knowledge and no deliberation, just some kind of affinity for a person. Remember Valerie, that many people think that is how Bush got elected – he was the kind of guy you could have a beer with. Never vote for Style over Substance Valerie. You will only be disappointed.

I know you don’t want look up the Anita Hill hearings or Clarence Thomas, Valerie, and you don’t want to know what ethnocentric means, or research the backgrounds of your candidates, because doing any research involves work. Nonetheless, you have a responsibilty as an American with the right to vote to be civil to those who disagree with you, and to be very well informed about those for whom you intend to vote.

This was a long post Valerie, and I do not believe you made it to the end, but if you did, if there is more to you than I suspect Valerie, why not check out the Green Party? Cynthia Mckinney will be getting my vote since, after 20 years as a registered Democrat, my former party cannot provide me with a representative who represents my ideals.

You folks are pretty darn pathetic—–genderists, bittersexists, angry lesbos. Saw one of your public relation reps on Chris Matthews the other night. Pitiful. Incapable of a smile. Bitterness, Inc. get a life, folks!

  9. I’m a republican and now John MCcain is garaunteed to be president thank’s to those dumb hillary clinton voters those idiots pumas people voters true idiot that get the credit will bowers we republicans got it made now because those trailer trash uneducated prickly pumas voters wan’t dare vote for a democrat now and they wouldn’t vote dumb obama in a trillion years no matter what their not ready to president dumb hillary clinton says about him saying she supports him now what trailer trash hillary clinton dumb pumas we republicans and especially john mc cain thank’s you’ll a lot .NOT!!!!!

  10. Brenna1975

In case you have not thought about this, for every vote you do not give to the Democrats, you are giving an edge to McCain.

If you are REALLY worried about fairness and equality that candidates can advocate for you might want to do a little research on McCain and Palin. McCain has received very low points from several women and social organizations including the National Organization for Women (NOW). All of these organizations have recently endorsed the Obama ticket, mainly for Joe Biden. Although he made a mistake in the Clarance Thomas trial he HAS done a lot of other good for women and children.

    Thanks for reading.
