family (re)union

I’m going to meet my sister whom I have never met before. If I recall correctly, she’s around 19-21 years old. She lives in Germany and has lived there her whole life. My dad was in the Army, see.

Anyway, she’s coming to America for the first time. We’re meeting up in NYC. I’m also going to see my father whom I haven’t seen in 5 years or so.

I don’t really have any big expectations. I expect a lil awkwardness, that’s it. I’m going into it pretty openly. It’s a fresh slate with my sister. My father and I have only started talking again last Xmas after years of being out of touch. I’m not on that resentment tip, so like I said, going into it openly. I’m sure it’ll be fun. I’ll def be following up here.

Have you ever had to reconnect or connect with family?

been there, done that. def not a pleasant experience for me. met daddy for 1st time and despite being disappointed and feeling resentful, I came back a year or two later to meet his family for Thanksgiving. before I arrived, I asked him if he had told them I was coming. he said no. I figured that he hadn’t told them because he wanted it to be a surprise, or he wasn’t sure if I would come through and didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up (I attempted to visit the previous year and wound up being unable to make it, and he was very disappointed). Anyway, i get there, and we are making the rounds to visit his sisters, and I walk in the door and they say who are you, and he says thats my daughter, and goes and sits down without saying anything else. turns out not only did he not tell them I was coming, he didn’t even tell them I existed.
